The liberation military competition 1917–1920 as a "wrong" revolution

The purpose of the publication is to analyze the political revolution of 1917–1920 as a defect in the functioning of the state body; characterization of national liberation military competition as inappropriate social mobility, which would ensure a peaceful rotation of elites, while contributing to the necessary socio-economic changes. The research methodology is based on the principles of specifically historical, problem-chronological approaches, objectivity and integrity, as well as the use of methods of analysis and synthesis. The scientific novelty of the publication lies in the interpretation of the course of events of 1917 – 1920 as a “wrong revolution”, despite the positive connotation of the term “political revolution”. Conclusions. Due to the positive connotation of the concept of “political revolution”, the national liberation military contests of 1917–1920 are also a political revolution, but an incorrect, modified revolution, that did not have a number of characteristic features or did not go through certain stages. According to Samuel Huntington, who elaborated the issue of political revolution most thoroughly, its signs are illegitimacy, change of political elites, redistribution of power, and broad popular mobilization. According to Crane Brinton, who was already dealing with the issue of revolutionary gradualism, the stages of the revolution were the stage of the fall of the old regime; the stage of power of the moderates; stage of terror; the “Thermidor” stage – the establishment of authoritarianism or totalitarianism as the “new power”. Therefore, the time period of the Ukrainian Central Rada was a stage of the rule of moderates with elements of the stage of terror, that is, the second stage with elements of the third. The Ukrainian state of Pavlo Skoropadskyi was the Ukrainian “Thermidor” or the fourth stage, whereas the time of the Directory is a fatal combination of the first and third stages. As a result of the Ukrainian revolution’s “wrongness” of 1917–1920 a modern Ukrainian nation has started its own creation, but a rather high price was paid for this creation
